From histories of clay workers’ collective publishing practices, to artist-run spaces marrying ceramics and Risograph printing, to the translation of bricks into books, we will talk through processes past and present of clay moving into print. You will have the chance to hear from artists and designers working across ceramics and publishing including Rosa Novak, Brendan Page, Tania Colette B., and others.&nbsp; Rosa Novak works across ceramic practice, archival research, and art book publishing. She co-runs Each and Every Press and is writing a dissertation on histories of clay workers’ labor organizing, their strikes, and the radical social forms they produced. Brendan Page is an assistant professor in the Art, Art History and Design department at Wayne State University whose work largely centers on Risograph printing. He is the founder of Each and Every Press. In his books, he mixes contemporary design with photography and an experimental 3D practice. Tania Colette B. is an artist based in Seattle. Her work explores the sculptural byproducts of political capitalism and state power. Her current projects center on tactics of “sculptural resistance”: barriers and monuments built by protestors in order to circumvent, resist, and critique state violence. For art books, this problem can seem even more significant, even when there are fewer words on the page than most publications. Every once in a while, the only answer is to make it yourself. In this talk, Lynne Yun of Space Type and Zach Clark of National Monument Press will share their processes for creating new typefaces for their publications, from traditional approaches to type design to the experimental and found. Zach Clark is an Oakland, CA based artist, educator, and publisher. He publishes as National Monument Press, a publishing project focused on supporting uniquely American stories through small edition printed matter and curatorial projects, completed largely through collaboration with other artists. He is one half of Chute Studio, an Oakland based Risograph publishing studio. Lynne Yun is a typeface designer, illustrator, and educator. From crafting woven calligraphic pieces to designing type for screens and publications, Lynne's work spans an evolving set of multimedia to bring a personal touch to everyday interactions. Isidor and Mara are Washington-based artists whose proposed projects delighted us with their material explorations and focus on communities and cultures both near and far. Isidor and Mara will present the results of their creative research in new publications at the fourth annual Seattle Art Book Fair on May 9–10, 2026. Mel Isidor is a Haitian-American designer, urban planner, and mixed-media artist based in Seattle, WA. Her creative spirit stems from a fascination with the built environment—exploring how cities reveal the relationship between people and culture. Her work combines photography, collage, printmaking, and book arts to create layered compositions of cityscapes that blend documentation and imagination across time and space. Mel’s artistic methodology is rooted in observation, using walking and photographic documentation as an immersive research method to engage with architectural details and urban patterns. Mel also leads Isidor Studio, her design practice founded in 2020 dedicated to the intersections of art, design, and urbanism. Through her design studio, she works across various research and civic publication design projects, leveraging design as a form of translation to make complex topics engaging and creatively representative. Dustin Mattaio Mara is a visual and type designer whose work explores the intersection between typography, language, and community. Mara writes, “In my own typographic design practice I find myself creating type-focused compositions, exploring how far the visual manifestation of language can carry meaning.” Mara has created publications, art installations, and typefaces with the focus on linking community back to language.&nbsp; Launched by SABF in late 2024, the Page Turner Fellowship provides an individual designer or artist who has not yet participated in an art book fair a one-time grant, a reserved half-table, and additional mentorship to support the creation of a new work to be launched at the Seattle Art Book Fair. The goal of this program is to encourage and support new voices in the art book field and to grow the connections among book artists and designers in Washington State. Smith and Cecelia “Mika” Westman have been selected for the inaugural Page Turner Fellowship. From January to May, Smith and Westman will work with SABF staff and mentors to develop new publications to be launched at the third annual Seattle Art Book Fair on May 10–11, 2025 . The incoming artists were awarded Fellowships based on their applications that included a proposal and sample work, which were reviewed by a panel of four advisors who are working artists, writers, and publishers: Jake Alexander, Alex Barsky, Kelly Froh, and Mita Mahato.For SABF 2025, Smith — a graphic designer and artist — proposed to work on a book that is a collection of collages made at the Rockland artist residency at Belfair, WA. Smith’s colorful collages were executed over a period of three weeks across the pages of a vintage promotional binder for “Pyro Antifreeze.” Westman proposed to create a shadow book — a series of pages from which light shining through could cast shadows on a wall —&nbsp;that could form the basis of shared experiences for telling stories. Harriet Tubman will be the subject of the first book in the eventual series. ARCADE Magazine&nbsp;︎︎︎ ABOUT SEATTLE ART BOOK FAIRThe Seattle Art Book Fair is a free annual festival that celebrates independent publishing, book design, and artist books. The nonprofit event hosts local, national, and international artists, designers, and organizations and includes exhibitors, talks, workshops, and art installations. The fair is focused on building and expanding the community of booklovers and bookmakers in our region by bringing together seasoned practitioners and newcomers. Seattle is renowned for its contributions to the arts and cultural communities. It has a long history of supporting books and publishing which led to it being named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2017. The Seattle Art Book Fair is modeled after the original New York and Los Angeles Art Book Fairs (established in 2004 and 2014, respectively), which are run by Printed Matter. Seattle will join a growing number of independent art book fairs on the west coast including the Vancouver Art Book Fair (est. 2006) and the San Francisco Art Book Fair (est. 2016). The fair is co-organized by Jayme Yen and Tom Eykemans, both of whom have worked in arts, design, education, nonprofits, and publishing for many years in Seattle, along with a dedicated team of volunteers and advisors.WHAT ARE ART BOOKS? Art books are a broad category of publications by artists, designers, and makers that reflect on books as a medium and publishing as an artistic practice. Art books often combine type, images, and materials in thoughtful ways that push the possibilities of what books can be. They can take the familiar forms of paperbacks, hardcovers, magazines, journals, and zines. They can feature narrative, poetry, photography, and illustration. They can be handmade, offset-printed, letterpressed, photocopied, screen printed, or risographed. Or, they can take some surprising new form and feature an unexpected medium that allows one to experience the world in a wholly new way. It started as a Shanghai Biennale off-site program, composed of 51 events in urban Shanghai based on individual/group experiences/actions within the context of urban transformation (2016-2017). Since 2018 onwards, it has evolved into a self-sustaining independent art publishing project, believing that publishing is both an urgent and valid artistic practice in contemporary cultural practice. In 2021, we published the first issue of the annual bilingual publication te magazine. Each annual issue takes inspiration from the current moment, generates a theme best encapsulating the thinking sparked by that moment, and invites researchers and creators from different fields to share their work around it. In 2023, motivated by the observation that many young artists lack the experience and resources—such as funding, suitable editors, and publishers—and are often unfamiliar with the process of making books, we launched our artist book projects to help artists publish their books. Elan Clement Robinson is the co-author, artist and graphic designer who creates the risograph prints, copper-plate etching, and comics for their solo and our collaborative zines. L.M. Zoller is the co-author/editor of our collaborative zines and the illustrator and collage-artist (printed on riso) for their solo work. In our latest art and culture zine, The Queer Language of Flowers Volume 2 (Nov. 2024), Elan designed the three-color risograph cover and interior botanical studies in both pen and ink and copper-plate etching. Incorporating etching into our zines is new for 2024. The project of Unpress is initiated by three artists Howsem Huang, Sinistra Pan and Tung-Lin Tsai, the press aims to take the process of deconstruction with both a literal and conceptual approach. To examine the structure of the text and images, is to decontextualize and rethink the medium. From prints to paper, paper to pulp, the words and images collapse while the ideas reform. To me, the word is the most meaningful individual unit in a larger design system. I consider how words look and sound, what they say, and how their content, order, and size affect what they might mean. As a graphic designer for the past three decades, my practice is rooted typographically. I stand close to serifs and line weights, stepping back to watch text transform into texture like a tree growing leaves. I make art books, maps, and posters that consider personal history. They are about how the weather has been understood, our historical tendency to color code, fabric dyes, inhabiting places, persistent isolation, what home looks like depending on who you are, how short stories can express the micro-oppressions of women, and the mixed meanings of traveling to the water. Through the mid to late 20th century, mimeographs allowed for an explosion in duplicated ephemera, from office communication to underground publication. However, due to their scarcity today, Zach Clark of National Monument Press had never even seen one in person before traveling 5000 miles for the opportunity to work with one in at TYPA Print Centre in Tartu Estonia. Now, he won’t stop talking about it.&nbsp; Zach Clark is an Oakland, CA based artist, educator, and publisher. He publishes as National Monument Press, a publishing project focused on supporting uniquely American stories through small edition printed matter and curatorial projects, completed largely through collaboration with other artists. It will examine three ideas—historical and contemporary perceptions of what an essay is, the particular opportunity of the personal essay for contemporary readers and writers, and how what we see on the page can influence our experience of reading. In an effort to sort through the variability of visual essays, this discussion will attempt to identify some organizing principles. Examples will be drawn from professional designers and writers, as well as students. Audience participation is welcome.&nbsp; Heather Corcoran is a graphic designer and a writer whose work explores data, place, and belonging.
